What Is ALS?

ALS is a progressive neurological condition where a person's motor neurons deteriorate and die. This causes the gradual loss of motion and movement in the body. ALS does not affect a person's cognitive ability. People with ALS maintain their personalities and intelligence. ALS does not affect the senses either, it is extremely specific to motion. Essentially, a person with ALS is paralyzed but can feel, hear, and sense everything. The cause of ALS is currently unknown. The average lifespan after being diagnosed is 2-5 years.
